One-Handed CatchOne-Handed Catch
by M.J. Auch

It’s the Fourth of July, 1946, and eleven year old Norm Schmidt is as excited about it as any kid, especially with America swept up in the joyous optimism that followed the end of World War II. But before the celebrating can begin, there’s work to be done in his father’s butcher shop, and in a careless moment Norm suffers a tragic accident that could put an end to all his dreams.

But like the country he is part of, Norm is a fighter—the kind of kid who won’t let a simple thing like losing a hand keep him from trying to do the things he loves.

In this inspiring story—based closely on the childhood of her own husband—author MJ Auch reminds us what guts and grit mean, and how even a kid with only one hand can still grab life by the throat.

Book of a Thousand Days

We have often said that our first goal at FCA is to please the original author. With that in mind, we were deeply pleased to see what Shannon Hale just posted on her blog  about our recording of her wonderful  BOOK OF A THOUSAND DAYS:

Full Cast Audio has done it again. They produce the audio books for all my young adult books, and I've never been anything but button-bursting pleased. This time they tackled book of a thousand days. This one was unique because it's my only book in first person, and since Full Cast does age appropriate casting, that meant that the entire book would be narrated by a young voice. Who could be up to that challenge?

Chelsea Mixon, of course. She took my breath away with her wonderful performance as Enna in enna burning, now her Dashti is equally brilliant. And yes, she is a teenager. What a talent. In addition, she had to sing Dashti's healing songs, which she did beautifully and lovingly.

It's always an extraordinary gift to get to listen to the audio book of one of my own. It's like seeing it for the first time as a reader instead of the writer, really getting to experience the story for the first time. I loved it. What a relief to hear those words and not cringe with regrets. I worked very hard on this book and I'm still inordinately pleased with how it turned out.

AUDIE NOMINEES

I'm proud to announce that we have three titles up for Audie Awards this year!  To be specific:

THE GREAT CHRISTMAS KIDNAPPING CAPER by Jean Van Leeuwen, narrated by our Artistic Director, Daniel Bostick as "Merciless Marvin the Magnificent" the funniest tough-guy mouse you've ever met.  The Category is "Children's Titles, Ages 8 - 12"

STAR BEAST by Robert A. Heinlein, narrated by David Baker.  This is one of Heinlein's great "boy's books" (which have been read and enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of adults over the last five decades)  The category is "Audio Drama"

PRINCESS ACADEMY by Shannon Hale, narrated by Laura Credidio. Shannon won a Newbery Honor for this, her second book.  The category is "Audio Drama"  Last year we won an Audie for "Achievement in Production" for our recording of Shannon's THE GOOSE GIRL.

(Yes, we're up against ourselves in the "Audio Drama" category. We have three nominations, but our maximum win is two!)

For information on all the nominees (in all categories) - and to hear samples of  any that interest you, just go to:  www.theaudies.com

Happy listening!

Bruce

RIVER SECRETS

We just finished our fourth studio session for Shannon Hale's marvelous RIVER SECRETS (third of her "Bayern" books) and I'm very pleased with the way it's going. We have the good fortune to have Seth Jackson back as Razo, who has graduated to the lead character in this story. Seth played the same role in both THE GOOSE GIRL and ENNA BURNING, and to me he truly is Razo.

Other "threepers" are Adam Wahlberg returning for his third stint as Geric, Will Dougherty for a third shot at Finn, and David Baker taking his third turn as Talone.

Chelsea Mixon, who took on the role of Enna for ENNA BURNING returns for a second shot at the character, and Brianna Larson is in her second turn as Isi.

As director I can say that it is truly a joy to have these gifted actors making return visits to characters on whom they have placed their personal stamp. I love this book, and I love the way these folks are bringing it to life.

Oh - there is one major change. Casting director Dan felt that with the focus on Razo this one called for a male narrator - Shannon concurred - and so the narrator's reins have been picked up by Mark Holt. Mark has long been one of our most valued actors, but this is his first time at the narrator's mic, and he's doing a great job.  (Fans of Cynthia Bishop need not worry - she's still very active with us, and will be narrating Geraldine McCaughrean's HERCULES starting next week. Cynthia has already narrated ODYSSEUS and THESEUS for us, and she has a masterful grasp of these great Greek stories.)
